Cloves get their name from their nail shape. This shape makes them perfect for many uses, such as sticking them into oranges to make lovely-smelling pomanders. Highly aromatic, whole cloves can be used in many dishes, but be sure to discard them before serving. Biting into one would overwhelm the palate with flavor and numb the tongue.
